Yoga is a great way to build resilience. Resilience is the human capacity to learn from experience (good and bad) and find purpose in our daily lives. Psychological resilience is defined as an individual's ability to properly adapt to stress and adversity. Stress and adversity can come in the shape of family or relationship problems, health problems, or workplace and financial worries, among others. In other words, resilience is one's ability to bounce back from a negative experience with "competent functioning".
In one segment emergency personnel and military may witness more trauma, loss, death and destruction than the average citizen will see in a lifetime. It is estimated that 25 to 30 percent of police officers have stress-based physical health problems and 40 percent suffer from sleep disorders. Numbers are rising for Post Traumatic Stress among all emergency personnel; 18 percent in police officers, 10 to 37 percent in fire service

First Responders and Military Personnel are no strangers to training, but more often than not it is physical and technical training. Yoga trains the mind and body to process stress and build resilience in a controlled environment. There is evidence that yoga techniques can prolong the duration of a SCBA tank through using controlled breathing techniques (there is a youtube video of a yoga class in full fire gear wearing the SCBA, and the tanks lasted the full 60 minutes of the class). Additionally, developing breathing techniques can help mitigate the body's fight or flight response in stressful situations, enabling you to make more mindful decision in critical situations. Finally, the physical aspects of yoga help keep the muscles more supple and pliable, reducing the risk of injury.
